St Nicholas’s Church

The filial Church of St Nicholas in Mevkuž originated as a chapel; the church and the bell tower are later additions. The story about the origins of the church is something special. The legend, recounted by Tomaž Bregant, a great expert on Gorje history, tells us the legend of a young nobleman who once got lost while hunting, slipped on a very steep slope, and fell into a river. He vowed to build a church if he survived. By the stroke of luck he did live to fulfill his promise. When he climbed up the slope, he saw a plane. Enchanted by the world that was opening up in front of him, he had a church built on the very plane that he saved himself on.
